Shanghai Period (1919-1932)
The Korean Provisional Government was established in 1919 in Shanghai, China. This is because Shanghai was a metropolitan city where it was easy to carry out diplomatic and promotional activities and the French concession in the city was favorable to the Korean independence movement away from Japanese influence. Initially the activities of the Provisional Government were organized in concert with nationalist groups within Korea, but this became impossible as more groups were detected by the Japanese authorities. Later in the Shanghai Period, the Provisional Government experienced ideological divisions and coalitions while pursuing different plans for national independence.
