생활개선

The 1960s lifestyle improvement campaigns for food, clothing and housing and the introduction of standards for family ceremonies (Gajeong Uirye Junchik, established in 1969) continued into the 1970s under the New Village Movement. Because women were mainly responsible for food, clothing and housing habits and family ceremonies, the lifestyle improvement campaigns were firmly within the work of the womens’ groups.

Campaigns to improve eating habits sought to improve nutrition, but were also a solution to the problem of food shortages by limiting the consumption of rice. Conference on standards for family ceremonies (Gajeong Uirye Junchik) in Maechon-dong, Ssangnim-myeon, Goryeong-gun. 1969. Photograph owned by Ssangnim myeon Town Hall. Different to the will of the leaders, the expressions of normal village women are bored and indifferent. When thinking of the conservatism in the four major family ceremonies (coming of age, wedding, funeral, and ancestral rites), it is doubtful that the standards for family ceremonies were ever fully implemented.

After the Korean War food shortages were severe, it appears that children made the effort to prepare all the dishes for their mothers’ sixtieth birthday. Rice cakes, octopus, yakgwa cookies and other special foods are displayed in front of a bouquet of camellias.

The state educated women to lead lifestyle improvement campaigns in each village and through these women spread lifestyle improvement policies to general village women. Organized through the Rural Revitalization Office (Nongchon Jinheung-cheong) from 1959, lifestyle improvement clubs educated women from rural villages on improvements to clothing, food and housing habits. Later, along with the founding of the Yusin system , they were incorporated to the New Village womens’ groups.
