Chongqing Period (1940-1945)
The Chongqing period came at the end of the Korean Provisional Government’s 27 year-long struggle. The Provisional Government arrived in Chongqing, China’s temporary capital, and joined the battle against Japan, creating the Korean Independence Army. It also announced its doctrine on the establishment of a new country while preparing for liberation by forming a government of cooperation between left and right. Confident of Japan’s fall, the Provisional Government joined the Allied Powers in fighting against Japan in order to be one of the Allied nations. It planned to dispatch the Korean Independence Army to Korea in August 1945, but this fell through as Japan surrendered right before the project started.
